Verizon settlement with state should improve phone service throughout Western Massachusetts

Dropped telephone calls and static and nonexistent landline phone service during rainstorms were the norm in the small town of Leverett for years, but those problems should be in the past thanks to a settlement with Verizon affecting more than 100 communities and approved by the state Thursday.
