Homebuilders and their subcontractors dropped 2,000 workers. A decline was expected in line with the continuing drop in the number of new homes under construction. The pipeline of new homes being prepared for sale is now extremely small so any pick up in home sales will quickly prompt a gain in housing starts. The rest of the layoffs were in heavy construction where job site spending has slipped slightly in the last few months except for large gain reported for power construction.
